Portion Size and the Fattening of America

Portion size could be the one thing that may stop the obesity epidemic in America from getting out of control. Studies show that the larger the serving size on your plate the more you will eat. Most people don’t stop eating when they feel full, they eat because it’s there. The servings are getting larger and larger. If this rate continues we will become immune to the larger portion and it will seem like a normal portion, leading people to consume more and more calories.

Bigger and Bigger

Just to give you an idea of where we’re headed, in the 1970’s 12 ounce soda was the typical size you would get from a restaurant but now it’s 20 ounces. That’s not even counting those huge sodas you can get at your local convenient store, some up to 64 ounces. Bagels used to weigh two to three ounces but now they weigh four to seven ounces. How about those McDonalds French Fries. A regular serving weighs one third the size of the largest size now. These larger sizes have become so normal to us that when we see these smaller one serving size portions they look like a tiny amount of food. We need to learn how to cut portions down to that single portion size.

The first thing you can do is when you’re at a restaurant ask for a box when your meal comes. Most restaurants will serve you enough food for two meals. Take half of your meal and stick in the box to take home. If the food isn’t on your plate you won’t eat it.

The second thing you can do is to read the nutrition guidelines label on the food you buy. This will not only tell you what is in your food, but it will also tell you how much food is one serving.

Moderation

Another thing you should do is to avoid buffets (or any other place that has a “all you can eat”) like the plague. With all that food sitting there just waiting for you, it will be hard to resist eating the correct portion size.

If you remember the saying “everything in moderation” you should do fine. Just take it one step at a time. If you start cutting the portions down a little at a time, you’ll never know the difference and you’ll end up being a healthier person.
