High Fiber Foods for Better Health

Before I go into why high fiber foods are good for your health, maybe I should explain what is fiber. I’m sure some of are saying “what is fiber and why is important for my health?”

What is Fiber

The fiber in food actually comes from plants. It’s the part of the plant that helps it maintain it’s shape. Since you cannot digest fiber it passes through the small intestine and into the colon where it adds bulk to the stool, making elimination easier. This is one of the steps for good colon health.

There are two kinds of fiber, Soluble Fiber and Insoluble Fiber. High fiber foods like whole grains, nut, wheat bran, and vegetables are considered insoluble fiber. this means that it does not dissolve in water which increases the bulk of the stool and helps everything move through faster. A high fiber diet of soluble fiber like the fiber found in oats, citrus fruits, apples, barley, psyllium, flax seeds and beans helps soften stools making them easier to eliminate from the body.

Fiber's Health Benefits

But, how do high fiber foods help you? Let me tell you some of things it could do for you. How would you like to lower your cholesterol? The fiber in food binds with fats in the intestine and helps lower the body’s cholesterol level. It also helps produce and repair colon cells.

Here’s one that a lot of you may be interested in. How about helping to promote weight loss? Fiber slows down the food being digested in your stomach giving you a full feeling longer, which means you’ll tend to eat less. Also, by keeping the food out of the bloodstream longer, it will moderate sharp changes in blood sugar after meals.

Here’s another big one. How would you like to eat more food and lose weight? Fiber isn’t absorbed into the bloodstream so you can eat more of it compared with other foods without subjecting yourself to excessive calories.

No matter how you slice it, fiber is an important part of your colon health. Not only will it help you stay healthy, but it will help those of you who are overweight make it to your ideal weight.
