Will The Fast Food Restaurant Cause the Death of Us All?

Since the emergence of the fast food restaurant, America has never been the same. 65% of US adults are either overweight or obese according to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. These numbers have been increasing since 1980. What does this have to do with the fast food restaurant?

Bigger and Bigger

Not only has the fast food diet been getting more and more popular since the 1980's, but the fast food industry has been steadily increasing it’s portion size. In the mid 1950’s one restaurant, who shall be nameless, only offered one size for an order of french fries. Today it’s the equivalent of the small size, which is one third the size of the large.

Getting the most value for your dollar is also a contributor. Most fast food chains offer value menus with larger sizes. Larger portions often offer better value, but also means more calories. This increased consumption of larger portions is leading to obesity and all the diseases related to it. When you take this increase consumption of food together will the decreased activity level, do to technology, we get a recipe for disaster.

Super Size Me

In the Academy Award nominated documentary film Super Size Me, directed by and starring Morgan Spurlock, he went 30 days just eating food from McDonalds to see just how healthy fast food is. Before launching his experiment he was examined by 3 different doctors who all said he is physically above average. They also tracked his progress through the entire month.

After thirty days, he gained 24.5 lbs, and his Body Mass Index rose from 23.2 (within the 'healthy' range of 19-25) to 27 ('overweight'). He also experienced mood swings, sexual dysfunction, and liver damage. It took Spurlock fourteen months to lose the weight he gained.

What about The Children?

The worst part of all this is that they’re going after children. You’ve seen all those places with the playlands for the kids and let’s not forget the birthday parties. They want those kids to remember those good feelings later on in life so when the get older they’ll be a customer for life. But what kind of life will that be if it makes them obese.

Are They Getting Better?

Now to be fair they are starting to have some healthier choices. Most offer salads, but if you put the dressing on that salad you could be eating as much calories as a burger. The problem with that is people don’t want to eat a salad at one of those places. They’re looking for that Burger-Fries-Soda value meal. It’s almost like they’re an addict who needs to get a fix.

With people consuming an average of 1000 calories for one of these value meals America is definitely headed in the wrong direction. If you want to avoid the health risk eating at a fast food restaurant, just don’t eat there. If you do want a fast food diet, exercise some extreme will power and be extremely careful of what you eat there. The life you save could be you own.
